Cavity Fillings and Sealants at Perimeter Dental

Cavity fillings are a simple restoration procedure method that can restore material lost to cavities or other mild decay and deterioration. Dental fillings are perhaps the most common procedure besides regular cleanings and issues with fillings holding are very uncommon. At Perimeter Dental, we offer composite, ceramic, and amalgam fillings. Which type we use depends on your needs, but we commonly use composite fillings because they are tooth-colored and have a more natural appearance when compared to amalgam fillings.

  • How do cavity fillings work?

Cavity fillings work by removing the decayed portion of the tooth and filling the area with a durable material to restore its function and integrity. The process begins with your dentist numbing the area around the affected tooth to ensure comfort. Next, the decayed material is carefully removed using specialized dental instruments. Once the cavity is clean, the space is filled with a composite resin that matches the color of your natural teeth. The composite material is applied in layers, and each layer is hardened with a special light. Finally, the filling is shaped and polished to ensure a smooth, natural appearance and a comfortable bite. This procedure helps prevent further decay and restores the tooth’s strength and function.

  • What types of fillings are there?

There are several types of dental fillings available, including:

    1. Composite Fillings: Made from a tooth-colored resin material, these fillings blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. They are commonly used for their aesthetic appeal and are ideal for visible areas.
    2. Amalgam Fillings: Composed of a mixture of metals, including silver, mercury, tin, and copper, these fillings are known for their durability and strength. They are often used for back teeth where the force of chewing is greatest.
    3. Ceramic Fillings: Made from porcelain, ceramic fillings are also tooth-colored and offer a natural appearance. They are resistant to staining and are suitable for patients who prefer a metal-free option.
    4. Gold Fillings: Gold fillings are made from a gold alloy and are known for their durability and longevity. They are less commonly used due to their cost and color.

At Perimeter Dental, we exclusively offer composite fillings due to their natural appearance and effective performance in restoring decayed teeth.

  • Is tooth sensitivity after a filling normal?

Yes, it is normal to experience some tooth sensitivity after a filling. This sensitivity can occur when the tooth is exposed to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks, and it typically subsides within a few days to a couple of weeks. The sensitivity is often due to the irritation of the tooth’s nerve during the filling procedure or the composite resin material adjusting to the tooth. If the sensitivity persists or becomes severe, it’s important to contact your dentist for an evaluation to ensure there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed.
